CARIBBEAN ARTS PROGRAM THROUGH PRIAA

BOMBA AND PLENA IN THE BIG LEAGUE.   A SPARK IN THE CURRICULUM AND IN THE EDUCATION OF HARTFORD, CT A 90 minute carnival-style workshop introduces students to Puerto Rican culture. Students will explore Puerto Rican traditions like"BOMBA AND PLENA" dance, mask making, costume showcasing, and poetry reciting. The workshop will also introduce students to fun call and response songs. At the conclusion of the workshop students will put what they have learned to the test as they play instruments, and perform the songs, giving them a more personal experience with the Puerto Rican culture. The workshop was held at Hartford Stage Rehearsal Studios on Main St., in Connecticut as an introduction for teachers in the Professional Development Conference-2013. BURUNDANGA: A CARIBBEAN DIASPORA PROJECT-2014

A folkloric and traditional arts project that focuses on the Afro-Puerto Rican music traditions and Carnival of (eighteenth century) with Bomba (Pronounced Bome-Bah) and/or (twentieth century) Plena (Pronounced Play-nah).  Our activities consist of professionally-led workshops or concert for general audiences, youth, youth/student-led Bomba and Plena performances, and multi-disciplinary exhibitions/performances by accomplished musicians, performance artist, visual artist and curators.  The project's name, Caribbean Diaspora, BURUNDANGA-2014, reflects the fact that Caribbean population movements and common historical experiences have resulted in cultural expressions that influence each other while being nationally unique but with regional commonalities. Lydia Perez Biography

Lydia Perez – Born in San Juan, Capital of Puerto Rico, she grew up in the town of “La Central” or “Hoyo Mula de Canóvanas”. She graduated from the Inter-American University, Magna Cum Laude, in June of 1989, with a Bachelor's in Business Administration. Four months later, she and her husband decided to move to Attleboro, Massachusetts. A year later, her husband bought a house in Warwick, Rhode Island. She has been living in Rhode Island for 32 years. Lydia lives with Wendell Rivera-Davila, her husband (retired from the Armed Forces), and her two daughters Yidell and Dorothy Rivera, all of them members of Lydia's nationally acclaimed group, Yoruba2. Lydia is a highly accomplished and dynamic performer. She presents traditional music, workshops and productions from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
