CARIBBEAN ARTS PROGRAM THROUGH PRIAA

BOMBA AND PLENA IN THE BIG LEAGUE.   A SPARK IN THE CURRICULUM AND IN THE EDUCATION OF HARTFORD, CT A 90 minute carnival-style workshop introduces students to Puerto Rican culture. Students will explore Puerto Rican traditions like"BOMBA AND PLENA" dance, mask making, costume showcasing, and poetry reciting. The workshop will also introduce students to fun call and response songs. At the conclusion of the workshop students will put what they have learned to the test as they play instruments, and perform the songs, giving them a more personal experience with the Puerto Rican culture. The workshop was held at Hartford Stage Rehearsal Studios on Main St., in Connecticut as an introduction for teachers in the Professional Development Conference-2013. Puertorriqueños ! A Puerto Rican FIRST ! ! !

A news conference by Governor Lincoln Chafee at 10am on Thursday, March 21st will announce the dedication of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City to Rhode Island this year. The National Puerto Rican Day Parade has over 80,000 participants with over twice the population of Rhode Island as spectators along its parade route and will be seen on television, cable and internet by over 7 million more PLUS print and radio coverage. Many dignitaries, including congressional, state and local officials and prominent Puerto Ricans (aren't we all?) are expected to be in attendance.  Members of the legendary Puerto Rican 65th Infantry who served in Korea are also expected.  Their valor was chronicled in a recently released documentary movie "The Borinqueneers."
