Puertorriqueños ! A Puerto Rican FIRST ! ! !
A news conference by Governor Lincoln Chafee at 10am on Thursday,
March 21st will announce the dedication of the National Puerto Rican Day
Parade in New York City to Rhode Island this year.
The National Puerto Rican Day Parade has over 80,000 participants
with over twice the population of Rhode Island as spectators along its
parade route and will be seen on television, cable and internet by over 7
million more PLUS print and radio coverage.
Many dignitaries, including congressional, state and local
officials and prominent Puerto Ricans (aren't we all?) are expected to
be in attendance. Members of the legendary Puerto Rican 65th Infantry
who served in Korea are also expected. Their valor was chronicled in a
recently released documentary movie "The Borinqueneers."
This historic announcement is possible due to the diligent work of
the Puerto Rican Cultural Festival and Parade of Rhode Island inc.,
whose outreach has been noted in numerous citations and awards. They are
well known for promoting Rhode Island where ever they go and were
recently named "The Official Ambassadors of Goodwill for the State of
Rhode Island" by proclamation of Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox.
The original announcement was delayed due to Blizzard Nemo and is
now being made simultaneously with another in San Juan, Puerto Rico that
also dedicates the parade to a city or town there.
The two news conferences will be connected by electronic uplink.
