EXPRESION DE BARRIO


 An amazing traveling exhibition by Puerto Rican artist Reynaldo Rodriguez. This exhibition that explores the West African, the Caribbean and the Puerto Rican history of the BOMBA tradition on Chicago and others part of the United States, also each mural have This colorful exhibition features the art of the Artist Reynaldo "GuAracibo" Rodriguez accompanied by the sounds & rhythm of Afro-Caribbean drums and dances of Yoruba2 and member of the Community. The exhibition will bring 12 pieces from Reynaldo Rodriguez, in which he uses portraits from some of the most important "Bomberos" in our community to represent various aspects of our Bomba music (drumming, singing, Cua, Maraca, etc). An important element of the exhibit will be the connection with Bomberos from Puerto Rico and the United States. Consequently, selected Bomberos from Puerto Rico and other states will provide context to these pieces by submitting letters describing their influences and their first experience in Bomba as well.

"EXPRESION DE BARRIO" will be part of OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY: A Mosaic of Diversity and Unity Exhibit; November 5-December 26, 2012. The program is a sharing the stories about the many people who have come to Providence and Greater Providence and their struggle to maintain their culture and to integrate into the fabric of their community. The program is a Collaboration with URI Providence Campus Urban Arts and Culture Program, The Puerto Rican Institute for Art and Advocacy, Inc. and the International Gallery for Heritage and Culture.

Bomba ! BOMBA is designed to teach children and teachers  about Puerto Rican and Caribbean history and culture through the use of traditional music and dance called Bomba , along with other rhythms commonly found in the Caribbean. Bomba is the traditional music and dance style that developed during the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico as a way of communication between slaves working on the sugar cane plantations on the coasts of Puerto Rico.  Students will learn the basics of Bomba in the form of call and response, where the instructor will chant a said phrase or call, and the students respond with the appropriate answer. Students will also learn about the dance of Bomba , which is presented in the form of a game: a completion between dancer and drummer where the dancer will try to outwit the lead drummer with their movements, in turn creating their own rhythm. BURUNDANGA: A CARIBBEAN DIASPORA PROJECT-2014

A folkloric and traditional arts project that focuses on the Afro-Puerto Rican music traditions and Carnival of (eighteenth century) with Bomba (Pronounced Bome-Bah) and/or (twentieth century) Plena (Pronounced Play-nah).  Our activities consist of professionally-led workshops or concert for general audiences, youth, youth/student-led Bomba and Plena performances, and multi-disciplinary exhibitions/performances by accomplished musicians, performance artist, visual artist and curators.  The project's name, Caribbean Diaspora, BURUNDANGA-2014, reflects the fact that Caribbean population movements and common historical experiences have resulted in cultural expressions that influence each other while being nationally unique but with regional commonalities.
